First you need some spare time. Depending on how much success you have, or how many articles you daily have submitted you need some time available to approve articles. Because I like keep my authors happy I get on up to four times a day and night to approve new articles. Unless you have this kind of dedication to your contributors think again before starting your directory. Also you need to check each article is worth adding, not a duplicate and not just a sales pitch. This means sometimes you have to be a bit hard and tell an aspiring writer that their work does not meet the grade - no one likes rejection. Get lazy and start mass approving and your directory will soon lose your most valuable asset - repeat visitors. So I suggest don't start an article directory unless you like reading articles.
Be prepared to be abused. Not everyone on the internet is ethical. Whilst 99% of internet users are lovely people you will get those who try to short change the system. Owning an article directory makes you a target for these people. Every day I decline/delete 20 "comments" sent by some viagra robot. Yes this gets VERY annoying.

So by now you are asking why do I run an article directory. I find it fun. Its nice to be a hub on the internet wheel. I love reading. I get to know what is going on around the world, what interests people and what is and isn't working. I get to learn other peoples marketing ideas and writing skills. It's nice to provide a service to people. Being an article writer myself I can appreciate providing an article directory for other writers.
Finally by being an editor at my own article directory - I never have my own articles declined!
